Fàilte! (Welcome!)
This blog is the result of my ongoing research into the people, places and events that have shaped the Western Isles of Scotland and, in particular, the 'Siamese-twins' of Harris and Lewis.
My interest stems from the fact that my Grandfather was a Stornowegian and, until about four years ago, that was the sum total of my knowledge, both of him and of the land of his birth.
I cannot guarantee the accuracy of everything that I have written (not least because parts are, perhaps, pioneering) but I have done my best to check for any errors.
My family mainly lived along the shore of the Sound of Harris, from An-t-Ob and Srannda to Roghadal, but one family 'moved' to Direcleit in the Baighs...

Harris Schools - Number of Pupils 1919-1959

The table shown below is to be found here but I have reformatted it to make some details clearer

Firstly, ten of these schools opened between 1920 & 1929 so I shall amend my earlier piece accordingly!
Secondly, I mentioned earlier that 'Obbe: and 'Leverhulme' were in the same area and the figures indicate the transition from Obbe School to the Leverhulme Memorial School following Lord Leverhulme's death.
Finally, Cliasmol and Kyles Scalpay both closed in 1960 so that the situation 50 years ago was that there were 17 schools on Harris, Scarp and Scalpay plus the one on Berneray.

Pupil numbers had fallen by more than 30% in just 40 years and another 50 years later, in 2008/9, they had dropped to just 226, falling to less than 28% of the number of schoolchildren in Harris 90 years earlier.
