Fàilte! (Welcome!)
This blog is the result of my ongoing research into the people, places and events that have shaped the Western Isles of Scotland and, in particular, the 'Siamese-twins' of Harris and Lewis.
My interest stems from the fact that my Grandfather was a Stornowegian and, until about four years ago, that was the sum total of my knowledge, both of him and of the land of his birth.
I cannot guarantee the accuracy of everything that I have written (not least because parts are, perhaps, pioneering) but I have done my best to check for any errors.
My family mainly lived along the shore of the Sound of Harris, from An-t-Ob and Srannda to Roghadal, but one family 'moved' to Direcleit in the Baighs...

As the 20th anniversary of the 1872 Act approached, and 8 years after the sitting of the 'Napier Commission' this was the state of, well, State Education on the island. It will come as no surprise to readers who have read my earlier pieces charting the increasing dominance of Tarbert to see the number of teachers now residing in North Harris. The Bays area appears to have spawned several schools and, notably, a pair of 'Pupil Teachers' aged 14 and 16 who I am guessing were a form of Teaching Assistant recruited from within the ranks of the older students in a school? The need for such support can more easily be understood from the simple fact that in this year there were just a few less than 1200 'Scholars' recorded in the Census.
